The origin of the University of Belgrade can be tracked down to the beginning of the 19th century when Dositej Obradović founded the University in 1808. The periods of the Higher School (1808-1813), the Lyceum (1838-1863), the Higher School (1863-1905), and the University (1905-) can be distinguished in terms of time development.

The Magna Charta of the European Universities is resulted from a proposal addressed by the University of Bologna in 1986 to the oldest European Universities. The idea of the Magna Charta was enthusiastically accepted.

During a meeting in Bologna in June 1987, delegates from 80 European universities elected an eight-member board, including the President of the European Rectors Conference, the rectors of the Universities of Bologna, Paris I, Leuven, Barcelona, Prof. Giuseppe Caputo (University of Bologna), Prof. Manuel Nunez Encabo (President of the sub-commission for Universities of the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Council).

The document, drafted in Barcelona in January 1988, was signed by all the rectors who were in Bologna to celebrate the 900th Anniversary of the Alma Mater.

This document aims to celebrate the deepest values of university traditions and to encourage strong bonds among European universities. It has universal inspiration and any extra-European university can join it. For more information, please visit the official website.
