A practical intellectual property workshop for teaching staff, researchers and associates of the University of Belgrade
The University of Belgrade, in cooperation with the European Union Intellectual Property Office – EUIPO, is organising a practical workshop dedicated to identifying and using intellectual property in research.
The “From Research to Value” workshop will take place on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, from 12:30 to 16:00, at the Rectorate of the University of Belgrade.
The workshop is intended for teaching staff, researchers and associates from the faculties and institutes of the University of Belgrade, regardless of their field of research or previous experience with intellectual property.
Are we recognising all the value hidden in our research?
A research result is more than a publication.
A new material, technical solution, piece of software, algorithm, database, method, design, name, know-how or another research output may contain valuable intellectual property elements that can support further research, collaboration with industry, technology transfer or real-world application.
The first — and often most difficult — step is to recognise that potential early enough.
The EUIPO methodology behind the workshop was developed in response to the need for simple, practical and accessible frameworks that help researchers identify intellectual property opportunities in their work.
This is not another lecture about patents
The workshop is designed as a hands-on, participant-driven experience based on small-group work, discussion and the analysis of concrete research outputs.
The aim is not to turn participants into intellectual property experts. Instead, it is to help them develop practical IP reflexes and learn to ask the right questions at the right stage of the research process.
Whenever possible, participants will work with real research outputs, including their own work where it is sufficiently mature and not subject to confidentiality restrictions.
The workshop follows four practical steps:
OBSERVE
What makes your research output different? Which elements are essential, and how does it differ from what already exists?
IDENTIFY
Which elements of your work could become intellectual property assets, and which elements are not protectable as such?
MATCH
Which type of intellectual property may be relevant — patents, copyright, designs, trade marks, trade secrets or other forms of protection?
VALUE
How can intellectual property contribute to further development, collaboration, application, market positioning or the broader impact of your research?
This four-step approach — Observe, Identify, Match, Value — forms the core of the EUIPO workshop methodology.
What will you take away from the workshop?
Through practical exercises and group discussions, participants will develop the ability to:
• identify the characteristics that make a research output unique;
• recognise elements that could become intellectual property assets;
• connect different elements of a research result with relevant IP rights;
• better understand how intellectual property can create value and impact;
• make more informed decisions before publishing, sharing or further developing research results;
• recognise when to seek support from intellectual property and technology transfer professionals.
The EUIPO model highlights four particularly important benefits of intellectual property: control over research results, increased impact, clearer collaboration and stronger recognition and credibility.
