Throughout its history, the University of Belgrade has aimed at establishing, nurturing and developing cooperation with other universities, both in the country and abroad, as well as other international organizations that are engaged in the higher education field. What so clearly supports this aim are the signed bilateral agreements of cooperation with a number of foreign universities on almost every continent, the membership in the European Universities Association (EUA), the Balkan Universities Network, the Danube Rectors' Conference (DRC), the Network of Universities and Research Centers of the Adriatic-Ionian Region (UNIADRION), the Agency of the Francophonic Universities (AUF), DAAD, the Educational Committee of the Council of Europe, UNESCO and other organizations that contribute to the development of education, science and culture.
The University maintains bilateral connections with a number of foreign university associations, supports the participation in the Tempus and the CEEPUS Programs and various international competitions for awarding funds for scientific research and the development of the educational process and the acquisition of material resources for the advancement of higher education teaching process. Furthermore, the University makes regular contacts and cooperates with trade associations as well as student exchange associations, for the purpose of performing study and summer practice programs (e.g. IASTE). The University of Belgrade takes part in educational fairs.
The University of Belgrade also works closely with the Tokyo and ITO Foundations from Japan. The ITO Foundation awards scholarships for specialized training in Japan to the best graduate students. The Tokyo Fund of the University of Belgrade was founded in 1988 with the resources awarded by the Japanese Foundation with the same name. The resources of this fund are being used to award the best graduate students of the Social Sciences Faculties. The donors' aim is to give support to students showing extraordinary accomplishments in their studies and in realization of their projects both in the country and abroad. The University of Belgrade collaborates with WUS-Austria, which also gives significant support in carrying out international cooperation. A great number of foreign citizens attend undergraduate studies at the faculties of the University. The majority of them study at the School of Medicine and the Faculty of Dental Medicine, where both the lectures and the exams for foreign students are carried out in the English language. Also, foreign students study at the faculties of the University of Belgrade as a part of variety of international educational, cultural, scientific and technical cooperation programs. The majority of them attend lectures at the Faculty of Philology, the Faculty of Economics, the Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Organizational Sciences, where specialized and scientific training are carried out in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral studies, as well as specialist degree and non-degree studies.
